Shazam: Fury of the Gods is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 film Shazam!. The movie follows Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his foster siblings as they face off against the daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), who are trying to take over the world. This is most certainly a typical superhero film plot which has been used for this film. The movie has been highly anticipated, with many people wondering if it would live up to the success of its predecessor.

The movie has received mixed reviews. Some critics have praised the film for its humour, with some even stating that it is funnier than the first film. However, other critics have criticized the film for feeling like a kids’ movie masquerading as a superhero film, with zero threat. The film has also been criticized for feeling messy and disconnected, possibly due to the filmmakers trying to fit too much into its 2-hour running time.

Despite the mixed reviews, many have praised the performances of the cast, especially the actresses who play the daughters of Atlas. Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler have been praised for their performances, even though their characters have been criticized for feeling underdeveloped.

Additionally, the film has received criticism for its post-credit scene, deemed by some as a meaningless addition that leaves DC fans with a false sense of hope and uncertain about Shazam’s potential appearance in the new DC universe, sparking debates and speculation.

Overall, Shazam: Fury of the Gods has received mixed reviews from critics. While some have praised the film’s humour and performances, others have criticized it for feeling like a kids’ movie with zero threat and for being messy and disconnected. However, the film’s open-ended ending has left many wondering if there will be a third film in the franchise, if Shazam remains in the new DCU universe (hopefully). I’d give the film a solid 3/5!
